How would I add a counter to my main website page that is not viewable to visitors? I have yahoo! site builder and cant figure this out!

I am just guessing, but there probably is a place on the control panel that has it somewhere. I know freewebs does.

Hit counters are often more of entertainment value than providing statistics. You can often edit the counts!
What you might want to look into instead is software that analyzes your site’s log files. Many web hosts provide this with your account. Some I have used are Analog, Urchin, Webalizer. Most of these you can view with a web browser and password protect them so only you can see the data.
The not only let you see your traffic, but you can use them for trouble shooting because many report errors too.
